Poet and author Maya Angelou has been briefly hospitalized for an undisclosed illness and has been told not to travel for several weeks.
Butler University in Indianapolis announced Tuesday that the 85-year-old Angelou had canceled an appearance scheduled for Thursday.
A note dated Tuesday and sent by her physician, Dr. Jeff Williamson of the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., to her speaker's bureau said Angelou had undergone a brief hospitalization, was recovering at home in North Carolina and had been directed not to travel for three to four weeks.
A message seeking more details on her condition was left with the speaker's bureau, Pembroke, Mass.-based MacRae Speakers & Entertainment LLC.
Among Angelou's books is the 1969 autobiographical work "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."
