Police: Crooks stealing from storage units, setting new locks

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

On the popular show Storage Wars, items inside abandoned units are auctioned off to the highest bidders. According to area police, there's been a sudden surge in the number of units being cleaned out, but it's not for an auction. Crooks may have stolen from you without you even knowing it.

Police in Clarksville and Hopkinsville said they're seeing a sudden upswing in the number of crooks coming onto storage properties, snapping the lock and swiping everything inside.

"We're really needing people who have storage units to check on them more often because this could've already happened to you, and you don't even know it," said Officer Paul Ray of the Hopkinsville Police Department.

In fact, Clarksville police said in just one night this month, they witnessed 22 storage unit thefts.

Police in Hopkinsville add the crooks they're seeing are being clever about it, snapping the lock, stealing everything in the unit and then putting a similar lock in the old one's place.

"There's a lock on it, so it doesn't look like it's been broken into," said Ray. "We're not going to know it either."

Police said it's a concern to have an increase in storage thefts in the Clarksville and Hopkinsville areas since so many of the renters would be soldiers deployed to Afghanistan. They said for deployed soldiers, it's important to have someone doing regular checks of the units.

"What's being targeted are the locks that the bolt cutters can get around," added Ray. "If you can get ones that are difficult for a bolt cutter, that's what you're going to invest in."
