Valley Watch, an environmental group, is outraged at the proposed plan to build two ammonium nitrate plants in Southwest Indiana. The issue stems from where the plants are projected to be built. The Rockport plant will be located adjacent to a synthetic natural gas plant while the Mt. Vernon plant will be located near an ethanol plant.
John Blair, the editor of Valley Watch, is calling for an immediate moratorium on both projects but he is specifically targeting the Rockport location. Blair feels that, after the devastation in West, Texas, the construction of these proposed plants is simply too risky.
"This town of West, Texas was almost wiped out, a good portion of it was wiped out by a plant that only produces 4,771 tons a year versus the one in Rockport that is producing 3,600 tons a day," said Blair.
Blair intends to meet with government officials as soon as possible to address this issue.
