Police: Copper thief stopped when he runs full speed into fence

Posted: Updated:

Evansville Police have arrested 32-year-old Steven Eble on several charges. They say he was caught trying to steal copper downspouts from St. Vincent's Day Care on West Delaware.

Officers responded to the scene when a citizen saw Eble climb a fence to get onto the property.

Responding officers saw Eble in a fenced in area. They say when he saw the officers, he tried to run from them.

Police say his escape was foiled when he ran full speed into the fence.

He reportedly hit the fence with enough force that the fence broke away from the other sections and broke a fence post. He fell to the ground and was taken into custody.

During the investigation, officers say they found downspouts in Eble's backpack. The Day Care spouts were damaged, but still on the building.

Officers determined the downspout in the bag came from Fire and Rain at 1st Ave and Division. Eble was charged with Theft, Criminal MIschief, and Trespass.

Eble was recently paroled on Burglary, Theft, and Receiving Stolen Property charges.
