Downtown Owensboro pulling together to help destroyed church

Posted: Updated:

A group of downtown Owensboro businesses are throwing their support behind a church destroyed by a fire last month.

You might say one mission of a church is to help people in need, but in Owensboro, it's the people helping a church.

Fire destroyed First Christian Church last month. Now some local business owners are out to help the church get back on its feet.

"We have several of them that are members that have gotten married there, their children have been there, they raised their children in that church. They all told us how horrible it was," said Samantha Ellison, owner of Bee Bop's Burgers, Shakes, & Fries.

"The downtown community is one that cares about each other. All of these wonderful store fronts, bars, restaurants, are all saying we're here to take care of each other and one of ours is hurting," said Ben Skidas, the manager at Famous Bistro.

This Saturday, nearly all of the downtown businesses will be giving a portion of their proceeds to First Christian Church. The money will be used to keep the church's ministries and services going while they're without a building.

Some of the business owners told 14 News that it's just neighbors helping neighbors and that's what Owensboro is all about.

"If we don't stick together than who is? We all have to pull together to help them and that's what we're all about," Ellison said.

If you want to take part, you can head down to Frederica between 2nd and 9th Streets to shop on Saturday. Just look for the stores with the benefit flyer in the window.
