Kentucky transportation officials stress work zone safety

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

We're in the heart of Work Zone Safety Week, and Kentucky transportation officials are reaching out to help keep drivers and workers safe.

The Audubon Parkway just outside of Owensboro is just one of several work zones that are currently active in Daviess County.

If your daily drives take you through any work zones throughout the state, officials want you to keep some things in mind.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, 11 people died and over 470 were injured in construction work zones over the past three years.

To help raise awareness of the importance of safety, several events are planned throughout the state.

Transportation officials encourage drivers to avoid merging at the last minute in work zones, as well as rubbernecking, or trying to get a look at what's going on in a construction area while you're passing through, since that can be a distraction.

Drivers are asked to put their cell phones down in work zones as well.

According to transportation officials, more drivers are killed in work zones than the workers themselves.
