Local runner at marathon: 'It was an explosion...a huge bang'

BOSTON, MA (WCSC) -

Charleston runner Bill Rowell had already finished the Boston Marathon and was in his hotel room when the explosions happened Monday afternoon.

"I had already finished and had been back at the hotel for close to an hour by the time that we actually heard the explosions," said Rowell, who lives in Mount Pleasant. "It was an explosion. A huge bang, much more than a pop."

Rowell, who came to Boston to run the marathon for the second time, said he finished around 1:45 p.m. and returned to his hotel.

About an hour later, Rowell said he heard the explosions.

"The [Boston Marathon] is such a great event. People come over from all over the entire world," Rowell said. "To have it marred by this terrible tragedy. It's just awful."

Rowell said there are several other Charleston runners in Boston and as far as he knows, all are safe.  Two Charleston-area runners, Kevin Brokes, and Zoe Romano, took to Facebook on Monday to let their friends know they were safe.

According to reports, two explosions happened at about 2:45 p.m. ET, nearly three hours after the first of the event's winners crossed. Police announced two people are dead and 23 have been injured.

"It's awful. It's sickening," Rowell said.
