A big decision that could clear the way for a major development along University Parkway.
With 7 'yes votes,' the area plan commission recommends the rezoning of 200 acres of mostly farmland for commercial and residential use.
The approval comes over the objections of those determined to keep the project from moving forward.
It's the first of two major hurdles for this project, the next being the county commission.
Thursday night's decision paves the way to turn this very dark 200 acre plot of land into a bustling commercial and residential development.
Despite their every last please, opponents of a University Parkway development couldn't sway members of the area plan commission to table tonight's decision.
The developer's attorney, Krista Lockyear, told the commission that the 200 acre development will include land for new homes, apartments, a farmer's market and retail stores.
Neighbors say the decision could pave the way for other projects literally down the road leading to more development on University Parkway.
USI, which is right down the road, is offering to co-fund a study and master plan for the area.
County commissioners will have the final say on this project and they are expected to vote in May.
