Tornado in Noxubee County in the area of Prairie Point and Deerbrook roads (Source: Tony Sudduth)
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Gov. Phil Bryant declared a State of Emergency for Kemper and Noxubee counties Thursday after a fatal tornado hit the area.
According to the Emergency Operations Center Director in Kemper County, the storm claimed the life of 28-year-old Carlos Madrigal, of Blue Mountain, MS.
The State of Emergency is an administrative tool that will allow the state to offer support and resources. Any other counties impacted by the severe weather will be covered, according to the governor's office.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says in addition to Madrigal's death, five injuries in Kemper County were reported due to the storm and tornado.
Seven Mississippi counties have submitted initial damage reports, according to MEMA:
Clarke: One home major damage, one home with minor damage.
Clay: Trees down in the Cedar Bluff Community. Minor roof damage to a few homes.
Forrest: At least one home damaged. Minor damage to a fire station.
Harrison County: Trees down throughout the county. Minor street flooding.
Kemper: One death and five injuries. Several home and at least one business damaged.
Noxubee: Trees and power lines down in the Shuqulak and Macon areas.
Quitman: Several buildings damaged and roads closed near Marks.
4-County Electric Power Association is reporting 3,955 customers, primarily in Noxubee County, are without power.
MEMA has deployed a mobile communications trailer to Kemper County.
The American Red Cross says it's headed to Noxubee, Kemper and Clark counties.
Tony Sudduth captured video of the tornado in Noxubee County in the area of Prairie Point and Deerbrook roads.
Gov. Phil Bryant says state resources have been deployed to Kemper County at the request of local officials.
