The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored four in the second and four in seventh to soar over Brescia University, 9-2, Tuesday night at the USI Baseball Field. USI sees its record rise to 17-12, while Brescia goes to 18-26.
The Screaming Eagles scored all the runs they would need in the four-run second inning. USI junior rightfielder Bryce Shoulders(Newburgh, Indiana) started the scoring with his first home run of the season, sending the ball over the left field fence.
USI followed the blast with three more tallies on a RBI-double by junior leftfielder Brad Wannemuhler (Evansville, Indiana) and a two-run single by senior third baseman Reece Rounder(Evansville, Indiana) to make the score 4-0.
After Brescia scored a run in the top of the third, the Eagles pushed the lead back to four runs when freshman catcher Ryan Bertram (Zionsville, Indiana) crossed the plate on Wannemuehler's second RBI double of the game.
The Bearcats closed the gap to three runs for a second time with a run in the sixth before the Eagles put the game away with their second four-run rally of the game in the seventh. USI scored three of the four runs on RBI-singles by junior shortstop A.J. Dokey (Howell, Michigan) and Shoulders and a RBI-double by Bertram.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Craig Austin (Evansville, Indiana) posted his first win as an Eagle. Austin (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and two walks.
Freshman right-hander Jay Haschmeister (Tennysen, Indiana), senior left-hander Adam Carver(Arthur, Illinois), and senior right-hander Ben Lady (Louisville, Kentucky) finished the game for the Eagles on the mound.
The Eagles conclude the 11-game homestand April 13-14 when the University of Wisconsin-Parkside visits the USI Baseball Field for a four-game series. The series starts with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and ends with a 1 p.m. twin-bill Sunday.
