MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE) -

A dog was shot and killed during a drug bust in Central City.

Authorities said they had a search warrant for a home on Park Street. Officials say a pit bull broke free from the basement of the home and attacked one of the officers, biting his pant leg.

Another officer shot the animal. The officer was not injured.

"Our officers are trained to protect others and to protect themselves. It's very unfortunate that an animal was hurt, but at the same time our officers responded according to our policy and that is it keep others safe and themselves safe. I'm very supportive of the officer's actions," Muhlenberg County Sheriff Curtis McGehee said.

The owner of the home, Brad Saulsberry, has been charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and harboring a vicious animal.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests may be made.
