Authorities say they are investigating the deaths of 33-year-old John Carney and 30-year-old Erica Davis as a murder-suicide after Sunday's Posey County shooting.
Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth says Davis and Carney had been a couple for many years, but had separated and Davis had moved out.
Oeth tells 14 News that on Sunday morning Davis was at the house she'd shared with Carney to pick up some things and talk with him.
Oeth says Davis' mother was with her, but was waiting outside the home.
At some point, he says the doors to the house were locked and there was an indication Carney wouldn't let Davis out.
Oeth says Davis' mother tried to get inside, then got one Carney's relatives and tried again to get inside.
He tells us at some point Davis, from inside the house, apparently said she'd leave from another door.
That didn't happen though, and soon after, those family members said they heard gunshots.
"It's just a tragedy, just a tragedy. We've got these three young children and it's just one of those split-second reactions that is going to affect lives in that community forever," Sheriff Oeth says.
Oeth says Davis and Carney had three children who ranged in age from one to ten years old. They are staying with family, he says.
Autopsies were conducted Monday afternoon. The Posey County Coroner is officially ruling Erica Davis' manner of death a homicide and John Carney's a suicide.
