Governor Steve Beshear is betting Kentucky's finest bourbon and country ham that the University of Louisville Cardinals basketball teams will bring home two national titles.
He has declared this week "Louisville Cardinals Championship Week" in the Commonwealth.
"I couldn't be more proud of the UofL men's and women's teams. Not only are they playing phenomenal basketball, but they sure look like they're having fun. Everyone knows that basketball is a big deal in Kentucky, and having both teams in the title games is incredibly special," said Gov. Beshear.
Louisville plays Michigan Monday night in the men's final in Atlanta.
Gov. Beshear put up a selection of Kentucky Bourbon Trail bourbons to Michigan Governor Rick Snyder in his friendly wager on that game. The bourbon selection includes one bottle each of Woodford Reserve, Four Roses Single Barrel, Wild Turkey 101, Evan Williams Single Barrel, Maker's Mark, Jim Beam Black, and Town Branch.
"The Cardinals have played outstanding basketball in this tournament, and I can't wait to see them take on the Michigan Wolverines. While both teams have had great seasons, I'm confident that UofL's quickness, tenacious defense and grit will overwhelm Michigan, and we'll bring that championship trophy back to Kentucky," said Gov. Beshear.
"The excitement for tonight's big game is felt all across the Great Lakes State today," said Gov. Snyder. "Basketball fans should be in store for a great game and I can't wait to watch the Wolverines cut the nets down after the game. The world's best cherry pie made with Michigan cherries is offered should the Cardinals prevail, but we don't plan to be baking any pies."
Gov. Beshear put up a Kentucky country ham in his bet with Gov. Dannel Malloy of Connecticut.
The Lady Cards take on UConn in the women's championship Tuesday night in New Orleans.
"No one is playing better than the Lady Cardinals. They've already taken out the nation's number one team and defending national champion, Baylor, then perennial power Tennessee, and held off California to reach the championship game," said Gov. Beshear. "These women are all heart, and when you combine their talent and drive with Coach Jeff Walz's game plan, I have no doubt they'll knock out UConn in the title game."
"Governor Beshear's Lady Cardinals have been playing impressively, but they are no match for the UConn women and Geno," said Gov. Malloy. "Tomorrow night I'll be cheering on the UConn Huskies, and soon thereafter I'll be enjoying another delicious Kentucky ham."
If the Cardinals win, Gov. Malloy will send a basket of Connecticut fruits, vegetables and candies to Frankfort.
"Louisville Cardinals Championship Week" begins Monday in Kentucky, and Gov. Beshear encourages all Kentuckians to wear red in support of the teams.
