The University of Southern Indiana baseball team could not get the key hit with runners in scoring position in falling to the University of Indianapolis, 6-2, Friday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI sees its record fall to 14-11 overall and 5-10 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 14-11, 6-9 GLVC.
The Greyhounds manufactured runs and took advantage of pair of Screaming Eagles' errors to build a 6-0 lead. UIndy scored single tallies in the second, third, and sixth before sealing the win with three runs in the seventh.
The Eagles could not get on track at the plate, leaving the 13 runners on base. USI also was 0-4 with a runner at third and less than two outs.
USI senior catcher Colton White (Springfield, Illinois) tried to get the Eagles' bats going in the bottom of the seventh when he smacked a two-run bomb over the center field wall. The home run, which cut the deficit to 6-2, was White's first of the year.
On the mound, junior right-hander Brandon Shaw (Cuba, Illinois) went the distance in his second start of the year. Shaw (1-1) allowed six runs, three earned, on nine hits and three walks, while striking out four in nine innings.
The Eagles and the Greyhounds continue the four-game series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The series finale is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.
