Suspect in shooting causes delay in local school corporation

Police from several different agencies worked together in Petersburg this morning to arrest a fugitive wanted for attempted murder.

21-year-old Darius Hardiman was wanted out of Anderson for shooting a man in the head.

While police looked for Hardiman, the Petersburg school system did what they could to ensure the safety of their faculty and students, which included a two-hour delay.

Around 6:00 A.M. on Friday morning, Superintendent Suzanne Blake says she and other school officials were told by police that they were searching for Hardiman in an area not far from Petersburg Elementary.

Not knowing where Hardiman could be or what he was capable of, Blake made the decision to put five area schools on a two-hour delay.

Not long after, police found Hardiman behind the Kangaroo gas station on Main Street.

But since the two-hour delay was already in effect, Blake says it was best to keep it that way.

"We learned around 6:30 that the fugitive had been taken into custody," says Blake. "At that point, since we had already initiated the delay, it would've been a little big of chaos trying to get everybody on the road and back on time. So we left it in place."

Blake says the school corporation stays in constant contact with the Petersburg Police Department so that they know exactly what to do and when to do it.

She says she's very happy with the way things went Friday morning.
