Raccoon blamed for power outage in Ind. town

Posted: Updated:

A raccoon that wandered into a power substation is being blaming for an hours-long outage in a south-central Indiana community.

An estimated 1,100 customers of both Duke Energy and Bartholomew County REMC were plunged into darkness when the raccoon caused an electrical short in both lines and equipment in a Duke Energy substation. Power was restored to the area early the next morning about five hours later.

REMC line superintendent Jim Kamman says the raccoon "got into a place he shouldn't have been."

He says crews will try to better secure the facility to safeguard it from future animal intrusions.
