Boy decides not to wear dress to prom in Clinton

CLINTON, CT (WFSB) -

One male senior who attends Morgan School in Clinton wants to wear a dress to his prom, and his plea is gaining community support.

Cameron Engle wanted to wear a long-sleeve pink prom gown in the style of the character Pinky from My Little Pony, so he emailed the school's principal and met with the faculty at the school, according to the superintendent of schools.

"When they asked me it was more just, I was doing it for the fun of it," Engle said.

However, the question of whether Engle can or can't wear a dress to prom has taken on a life of its own in the form of an online petition drive.

Kaleigh Mulcair said she started the petition because of the issue of transgenders.

"It's not only to support Cameron wearing a dress, but also the bigger issue behind it," Mulcair said.

"Now everyone is taking it serious," Engle said. "Freedom of rights or whatever, and then there's this whole petition thing going on. Sure, I sparked a revolution I'm not even part of."

Ruth Cantalupo, who owns Collins Tux Shop in Old Saybrook, said they try to meet all their customers' requests, male or female.

"We've had girls come in and wear dresses, I mean tuxedos, to prom," Cantalupo said. "And never had a problem with that."

Engle's choice now is not to go to his senior prom.

"I'm staying home," he said. "Most of my friends pretty much said screw the prom. We'll go over to your house, record some video games commentary and I'll be wearing a dress."
