ATCHISON, KS (KCTV) -

A flight to Atchison, KS, landed five people behind bars after authorities found a plane load of pot.

The 42 pounds of high quality marijuana came inside suitcases that were loaded onto the plane.

"We were prepared even though we had to act quickly," said Atchison police Chief Mike Wilson.

It was Wednesday morning when Atchison police learned an airplane full of pot was heading from Colorado to the Amelia Earhart Airport outside of town. Within hours a dozen officers, many undercover, were on the scene, lying in wait.

"I don't think they were counting on landing in a small rural airport and having law enforcement intervention at that point," Wilson said.

Wilson said when they got information about the plane, they also learned two people from Kansas City would be driving up to meet the aircraft. The car arrived first, and about an hour later, the plane landed with three people on board and the suitcases full of pot.

"As the events unfolded, we had a sweep by a squad of officers and took five people into custody," Wilson said.

The police department seized the plane, the Saab the suspects were driving and recovered an estimated $120,000 in marijuana.

"I'm sure they were frustrated they lost the marijuana, but they also knew their time was up," Wilson said.

All five suspects are facing charges of possession of marijuana with attempt to distribute.
