OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
The body of a fallen American hero who was killed last week in Afghanistan returned home to Owensboro Thursday morning.
Senior military officials say Michael Cable was killed last week when he was stabbed in the neck by an Afghan teenager.
Family and friends watched with both sadness and pride as Sgt. Cable's casket, draped in the American flag, was carried out of the plane by fellow soldiers.
For Lisa Burns-Kirby, whose son knew Cable, it was hard to find the words to describe the moment.
"It's all the flags, the honor and the respect that's here," says Burns-Kirby. "It's just awesome. It's amazing. This is a big thing for our community and the feeling is overwhelming."
Several of veteran groups including the Patriot Guard and Owensboro American Legion rode in the funeral procession on their motorcycles.
"It's tough," says Kenny Conder, a Patriot Guard rider. "It's always tough. None of us like being here for something like this. We're all looking forward for the day we can get together for something that's not like this."
Some of the oldest and youngest residents waved flags as the hearse carrying St Cable's body passed by.
Many of them didn't know him or his family personally. Suzanna Rise, a local Daisy Troop leader, felt compelled to pay their respects to someone who has given so much and says she's still sad for the loss his family is experiencing.
"There is no greater sacrifice, but there's not enough thanks that we can give for what he has sacrificed for us and our freedom," says Rice. "Sadness and tears and my heart went out for the family and friends of the fallen soldier."
Sarah Barnes wanted to have a final reunion for her former classmate.
"I felt like I needed to come and support him for his service to our country," says Barnes. "I have a brother in the military right now and if it were him, then I would want to see the support."
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday and again on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Haley McGinnis Funeral Home.
Sgt. Cable's funeral will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
He will be buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Owensboro, Kentucky.
