Driver, eating, crashes SUV over rail of Twin Bridges

Posted: Updated:

It was a close call on Wednesday night for a driver who got into an accident on the Twin Bridges between Evansville and Henderson.

"I was going towards the rail. I was hoping and trusting I wouldn't go over," driver Darrell McIntosh said.

The accident happened in the southbound lanes of US 41 heading over the bridge around 7:30 p.m.

McIntosh talked with 14 News right after the accident and said he was headed to work and was eating when he approached the bridge. He said his SUV hit the curb on the right side of the bridge and blew a tire.

That's when McIntosh said he lost control of the vehicle and ended up on the railing.

"I could tell I was shook up going back and forth, could tell that I was possibly going to go over. Got some sense into me and looked for the door knob. That's what I was thinking," McIntosh said.

Thankfully, there were no injuries in the crash.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a check of the southbound bridge indicated no structural damage. They said the top railing can be replaced and that will be done during daylight hours when it's safer for workers and the driving public.

The bridge was closed while crews cleared the scene and reopened around nine.
