Walkers take a step forward for better heart health

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's a reason to get moving. As the temperatures slowly but surely increase, the American Heart Association hopes you'll begin healthier habits and walk a little more.

One in three Americans are affected by heart disease. That's one reason why April 3 is National Walking Day - a date to put your lifestyle on the right track.

Seven out ten people aren't breaking a sweat enough. Just as many are overweight. "When you look at the statistics and the people you see here today, there's quite a few who could be affected by heart disease," spokesperson Ashley Mason said.

Tracey Coke knows she's one step closer to better health. Every day she walks before and after work.

"I made the decision a few years ago to lose weight and be more healthy and be more active. I just get out and do it. I'm feeling great - better than ever," Tracey Coke said.

Companies across the metro encouraged employees to walk a little more Wednesday. University of Louisville, and UPS, Fifth Third Bank, Brown-Forman and Kentucky One Health broke dress codes and allowed workers to wear tennis shoes if that's not usually part of their work attire.
