11 honored at treatment court graduation ceremony

Posted: Updated:

For 13 years, Vanderburgh County Treatment Court has been helping convicted drug offenders get sober.

A graduation ceremony honored 11 of the most recent graduates on Tuesday.

Superior Court Judge Wayne Trockman says the majority of the graduates start out running from law enforcement and are now using those same officers as a support system on the road to sobriety.

Leandre Ussery, one of Tuesday's graduates, says he frequently when on drinking binges and stole a car. He says he chose to go through treatment court because he has two young children and wanted to turn things around for them.

"It benefits everybody. Great workforce, motivated individuals that choose to be a productive part of society and also makes better mothers and fathers, as far as I'm concerned," Ussery said.

Treatment courts have reformed more than 330 individuals. Officials credit strong support systems and a strict program for high graduation rates and low re-arrest rates.
