Mt. Vernon has finished the multi-million dollar overhaul of its sewer system.
The renovations at the new wastewater treatment facility are the biggest and most expensive project that Mt. Vernon has ever done.
Mt. Vernon Mayor John Tucker tells 14 News that when it rains, the extra water would hit the sewer system, causing it to spill into the river. He says these upgrades will prevent that going forward.
Mayor Tucker says such an extensive project is a big accomplishment for Mt. Vernon, especially after nearly five years of work.
"When we took office in 2008, this was on our plate. IDM and the US EPA, we were one of those communities that had a judicial order, we had a court order, that said we had to do this, Mayor Tucker said. "I'm glad to stand here, sit here and say it's done. It's off of our plate."
14 News is told the project cost upwards of $16 million, about half of that money came from grant funds.
