Single mothers in Hopkins Co. getting a chance at a new start

HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) -

Single mothers in Hopkins County are getting a chance at a new start and a place to call their own.

A little over a year ago, Life Christian Church and its parishioners began raising money to build a duplex with the purpose of housing struggling single mothers and their children.

Associate Pastor Jon Kincaid says the duplex cost around $100,000 to build, and about 90 percent of that came from Life Christian Church.

There are two units. Each unit in the duplex is around 1,300 square feet, fully furnished, housing three bedrooms, a living room and kitchen, with two full baths.

"Well hopefully our hope is that it'll take families who have experienced hard times that maybe could not have been preventable in their lives and give them the opportunity to re-establish themselves and have a better future. Not only for the mother, but for the children," Kincaid said.

The next step is handling applications for the duplexes which will include background checks, as well as drug testing. Applications are available in the Life Christian Center's office.

No out of pocket expense is required of successful candidates.
