Just two months after Kaufman County assistant district attorney Mark Hasse was shot and killed in broad daylight right outside the Kaufman County courthouse, the county's district attorney, Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were found shot to death in their home in Forney.
Although the courthouse remained open, on Monday, flags at half-staff, County Judge Bruce Wood said that the district attorney's office would remain closed, as the FBI continues to canvass the Forney neighborhood where the couple was killed. The staff at the district attorney's showed up anyway, meeting with the county sheriff and judge.
While Kaufman County residents are saddened by the murders, they said they don't feel like their safety is threatened.
"Our prayers and our thoughts are with them at this time," said Kathleen Moore, a Kaufman County resident. "It's just a hard thing for our community to go through."
"I still feel safe here in Kaufman County, I don't feel threatened," added Robbie Sutton. "I guess I don't feel like a target here."
A local businessman who knew McLelland said the district attorney will be missed.
"He's the kind of guy we like to have - a lot of joked - but the type of person who really took his job serious," said Bobby Aga.
In a press release on Monday afternoon, the district attorney's office said they will continue moving forward to serve the community while working through the tragic events. Brandi Fernandez has been chosen to fill in as the district attorney in the interim - for as many as 21 days. Fernandez currently serves as the county's first assistant district attorney.
A search warrant was released on Monday as investigators begin to recover ammunition, shell casings, biological and trace evidence, as well as personal items and electronic devices from the McLelland residence. The search warrant reveals that the couple had been shot multiple times when they were found dead in their home.
Investigators have also requested cell phone records for nearby cell towers. This request, known as a 'tower dump,' would show investigators any cellular devices that connected to the towers.
