Ohio County residents will draw attention to a serious issue with an event that brings the community together.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and today's Pinwheels for Prevention Picnic is being held to spread awareness throughout the community.
It's taking place from noon until 2 p.m. on the Ohio County Courthouse lawn.
There will be free cookies and drinks, but everyone's also encouraged to bring a picnic lunch.
Since pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention, everyone who attends today will get a pinwheel to plant on the lawn to show their support.
Children are invited to participate in the pinwheels coloring contest as well.
Any donations made at the picnic benefit Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky.
Child welfare resources will also be available.
To mark the 20th anniversary of an event called Celebrate the Child, organizers say that 2013 has been designated as the Year of the Child in Ohio County.
Different activities honor the county's mission to protect and help local children.
Today's picnic will take place rain or shine and everyone is welcome to come support children in the community.
