Thousands gather in Downtown Evansville to worship on Easter Sunday

Posted: Updated:

In downtown Evansville Sunday morning, thousands of people joined together to celebrate Easter.

It's been one year since Crossroads Church held their first Easter service at the Ford Center.

The pastor at Crossroads Christian Church says he's glad to be able to hold the Easter church service in such a popular downtown location that will help the tradition grow.

"I just can't believe on how many people attend this service and how much impact the church has on everybody," service attendee, Karnesha Marsh said.

Senior Associate Pastor Todd Bussey with Crossroads Christian Church says at first glance, he estimated about 7,500 people gathered at the Ford Center Sunday morning.

Bussey tells 14 News that attendance is down a little compared to last year. He says that's most likely due to families going away for Spring Break.

"We knew that was going to be a challenge, but it looked full, felt wonderful," Bussey said.

Bussey says the yearly service, with a sermon and music, has been going on for around 15 years, moving from the Victory Theatre to Roberts Stadium, and last year, to the Ford Center.

"Has been a great venue for us in that there's been a lot of extra resources," Bussey said.

"All of our people in different services get together in one body and worship together," said Richard Sears, the Associate Music Minister at Crossroads.

Some who attended say the Easter service also unites people from outside the church family.

"There's people who normally do not come to the services that will come during the Easter time," Yolanda Sears said.

Bussey is hoping the Ford Center's space and accessibility, allow for even more people to come together in the future.

"This is something we anticipate every year," Bussey said.

Bussey tells 14 News that Crossroads Christian Church has about 3,800 regular members. He says each Easter he also sees a few thousand new faces.
