A Daviess County soldier killed while serving overseas this week was honored on Saturday in Tennessee, where his sister created a memorial right outside of her home.

One of Michael Cable's sisters, Lisa Osbourne, lives in Bluff City, Tennessee. She says her brother was a caring man and that he died helping others.

On Saturday, she and her sons honored his service.

"I was 11 when he was 1. So he was my baby. I would buy him candy," Osbourne said.

Osbourne says her brother, Michael Cable, died serving his country and helping those in need.

"He was on patrol and saw a situation where he was needed," Osbourne said.

Osbourne says her brother stopped to give water and toys to a group of children on the side of the road when he was ambushed and killed.

"We received the call Wednesday night that he was killed in the line of duty," Osbourne said.

Having served both in Iraq and Afghanistan, Cable was on his last tour and was due to return home in September.

"We were making plans to go on family trips and celebrating. It's just such a shock. I was in the mode, 'He's coming home. The hard part's over,'" Osbourne said.

Now, Osbourne's sons no longer have their uncle, but what they do have, are memories.

"I'll miss football and swimming with him. He liked to tell jokes," Cable's nephews, Isaac, Isaiah, and Jacob, said.

In memory of Michael, Osbourne and her family made a memorial to make sure his sacrifice will not be forgotten.

"I just want people to drive by and know somebody's son, somebody's baby is gone," Osbourne said.

Osbourne says they are still waiting for Michael's body to return from Dover Air Force Base. She says his funeral will likely be held either Tuesday or Wednesday in Owensboro.

As soon as we learn more about the funeral arrangements, we will let you know.
