14 News heard from the family of the Daviess County soldier killed in Afghanistan earlier in the week.

Sgt. Michael Cable was killed in action and his body has been returned home.

It's been a time of grief and pride for Sgt. Cable's family.

"He was just a great person," says Cable's sister, Kennedy Johnston. "He liked to be with his friends and everything. He was very family oriented."

The soldier's sister remembers Cable surprising her on her 13th birthday.

His family says he loved playing sports and had a wonderful sense of humor.

"He was probably one of the funniest people I think any of us had ever encountered," says Johnston. "He always made everything okay."

Cable was a member of the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell and was awarded the bronze medal.

"He was out there for all of us," says Johnston.

His family says funeral arrangements are still being made.
