WAYNE COUNTY, MI (AP) -

A Detroit police officer on the force for more than a decade has been accused of orchestrating a series of robberies in southeast Michigan.

Thirty-four-year-old Clifton Whatley was arraigned Thursday in a Taylor court on three counts of armed robbery, two counts of bank robbery and other charges.

A judge set bond at $1 million and Whatley is in custody. Prosecutors say he doesn't yet have an attorney.

Authorities say he organized robberies in numerous Wayne County communities between last May and this month.

His preliminary examination is scheduled for April 8. An associate of Whatley also faces arraignment on robbery charges that day.

Interim Detroit Police Chief Chester Logan said in a statement that Whatley has been suspended and the department is cooperating with the Michigan State Police's investigation.
