Walmart drops option to buy former York Plant for supercenter

HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) -

In Hopkins County, Walmart drops its option to buy the former York Plant in Madisonville in order to build a new supercenter.

That's according to our media partner, the Madisonville Messenger.

A representative of property owner Tower Investment LLC says the property is back on the market.

A Walmart spokesman couldn't give an update on efforts to select a final site, but said the company still plans to build a new Walmart.

Zoning may have played a role in this decision. The York property is currently zoned as industrial.

It would have to be rezoned as commercial to allow retail sales.
