At 500 pounds underweight, a neglected horse named Beetle is nothing more than a bag of bones.
The next stall over is a horse named Echo whose not much better off. They are part of five horses rescued about three weeks ago by the Geauga County Humane Society.
One worker was shocked at the condition of the animals. I have been working with horses all my life and this is the worst I have seen.
The horses have lots of scars from fighting with each other over scarce food. Hunger also drove them to try and eat fence posts, thick fence posts eaten down to toothpicks.
The owners are a woman and her adult daughter who took off to Kansas and left their horses for dead back in Ohio.
Authorities hold little hope in extraditing the woman back to Ohio for misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.
So authorities have ownership of all five horses and are nursing them back to health but have incurred steep bills for food and medicine and would appreciate any help the public can give.
