In a consumer alert, one mortgage company is going door-to-door to solicit personal information from homeowners. Apparently, it's not illegal, but some homeowners believe it's unethical.

It isn't a scam, but it is a warning that if you get a notice in your door, it is from the mortgage company, Select Portfolio.

Johnance Strueh says a man rang her doorbell Tuesday afternoon and put the flier on her door. She says she opened the door and opened the envelope while the man who delivered it, sat in her driveway.

She says it looked like a solicitor's envelope and she was angry that he bothered her and was still on her property.

"I opened it up and I shook my finger at the person in the car. I couldn't see them because of the tinted window, and said, 'you need to leave or I'm calling the cops or I'm going to get my gun,'" Strueh said. "The window opened just slightly and a hand reached out like a phone call, and I heard a man's voice say, 'you need to call that number.'"

Strueh says she called the number and a recording asks for the loan account number. If you don't have that, it prompts the caller to enter their social security number.

As a precaution, you shouldn't enter your social security number if you don't know who you're giving it out to.

14 News tried to contact this company, but only got their recording.
