Allen Tumey Allen Tumey
LAKE CHARLES, LA (WAFB) -

Veteran television news reporter Allen Tumey, well known for his series "Tumey's Travels", has died.

Tumey was found in his home in Lake Charles Monday afternoon. He was 70 years old.

Services for Allen Tumey will be held this Thursday, March 28, 2013 in Lake Charles, LA at Hixon Funeral Home at 3001 Ryan Street.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 7 p.m.

Tumey retired from WAFB-TV in 2011 after eleven years at the station where his primary focus was feature reporting across Louisiana. His regular segment on WAFB-TV was known as "Tumey's Travels".

Tumey previously worked for stations in Lake Charles and Evansville, Indiana.

Raycom Regional News Director Vicki Zimmerman hired Tumey when she was News Director at WAFB-TV. The two had worked together years before in Lake Charles. "When looking for a good feature reporter, I turned to the best feature reporter I had ever worked with," Zimmerman said.  "He had a knack for not getting in the way of a story but letting the pictures and the people tell the story."

"I always had the feeling that Allen would do his job for free," said WAFB anchor Donna Britt.  "There was such joy in his heart, and in his reporting. He had the unique ability to mine every situation for its charm, humor and beauty."

Britt remembers the gentle side of Tumey.  "As extroverted as he was on TV, he was always rather quiet in the newsroom," she said.  "He'd take brief breaks from our newsroom clatter to smoke his pipe outside where the birds, the sky and the people were."

Allen was also known for his sense of humor.  "He'd tease me occasionally," Britt said.  "When my son was born, he knew full well his name was Louis.  Allen would ask "How's Baby Leroy?""

Tumey received numerous awards over the course of his career, both on the national and state level.   Among the honors he received was the coveted Iris Award from the National Association of Television Program Executives.
