Owensboro Public Schools hopes to become a state-approved District of Innovation.
The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/14gVFw1) the designation would allow the district to break rules in the hopes that innovative changes will increase student achievement.
The plan includes designating a master teacher to act as a dedicated learning coach to a group of sixth-graders for at least five years and ideally through graduation in 2020.
Students would have more flexible instruction with the freedom to spend school hours working on a supervised project elsewhere in the community.
Select elementary schools would shift to a half-day instruction model with reading and math in the morning and innovation labs in the afternoon.
Administrators should know by midsummer whether the plan is approved.
