SEATTLE (KOMO/CNN) - You can't explain a "gray area" to a drug-sniffing dog, which has caused a few problems in Washington.

Police are trying to retrain drug-sniffing dogs to ignore marijuana now that the state has legalized the drug for personal use.

Most of the dogs still alert police to the presence of marijuana, since the vast majority of them were trained before legalization of the drug went into effect.

Prosecutors in Washington warn police they may now need more than a K-9's alert for a search warrant.

The Seattle Police Department said it is no longer training drug-sniffing dogs to detect marijuana.

Police are also trying to retrain the dogs by desensitizing them to marijuana.
