Wind rips apart SW Washington barn, tornado confirmed

HOCKINSON, WA (KPTV) -

A woman living near Hockinson heard a boom, so she looked out the window just in time to see a swirling cloud touch down on top of her barn and rip it apart.

The National Weather Service in Portland confirmed Thursday night it was a tornado.

It happened just after 4 p.m. on Northeast 189th Street.

Irene Ginter said they had hail and rain throughout the afternoon, along with a black sky for what seemed like two hours.

Then, an extreme wind event hit.

Firefighters said strong winds picked up pieces of the barn's roof and hurled them over a 10-acre area to the east. The building partially collapsed.

"The barn was flying around," Ginter said. "We have half a barn hanging there."

Ginter said the barn was built in 1945. It was an old house converted into a barn.

Recently, she said, her family had been working to secure it. It currently stores hay.

The National Weather Service described Thursday's tornado as the weakest type typically seen, but winds still likely reached 65-80 mph.

It was an extremely localized event, because nothing else nearby was damaged.

"It came and went in just 15 or 20 seconds," she said.

Dispatchers said no other calls were made to 911 reporting a possible tornado in the area.

Nobody was hurt in the storm.
