(CNN) - America's top pediatrics group released a statement Thursday in support of same-sex marriage.
The group said marriage gives children a feeling of permanency and security.
It's the same advantage the children of straight couples get when their parents are married.
The statement's co-author, Dr. Ellen Perrin, said marriage gives those kids confidence that their family is just like the families of kids they know in school.
The American Academy of Pediatrics said almost 2 million children are being raised by gay or lesbian parents.
Only nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized same-sex marriage.
