CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA (Seven Network/CNN) -The prime minister of Australia publicly apologized Thursday to families affected by forced adoptions.

An untold number of unwed women in Australia were forced to give up their children for adoption between the 1950s and the 1970s.

Estimates put the number at tens of thousands of forced adoptions.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard offered an apology before hundreds of people who were affected by the practice.

She also pledged $5 million to improve access to specialist support and records tracing.
