WATERVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Police in Waterville have found the driver responsible for a wreck in Waterville early Wednesday morning. The crash happened on the 200 block of Lexington Avenue, off of US-24 in the village around 12:20 a.m.
According to witnesses, a person was driving a Lincoln Town Car erratically and attempted to pass a Jeep on the road. The driver bumped into the Jeep, causing his car to lose control. The car left the roadway and went airborne, crashing through a fence and into a garage.
A gas line was knocked out during the wreck. Anthony Wayne Trail had to be shut down for hours because of the ruptured gas line, as well as a fallen electrical wire.
Witnesses say they saw the man climb out of his car after it crashed and run away with part of the bumper.
A lot of blood was seen inside the car, leading investigators to believe the driver was badly injured. A board went through the car's windshield during the crash.
Melissa Carter, who lives in the damaged home, says she woke up to the garage alarm going off. She said when she ran outside to see what was happening, she saw a man fleeing, but didn't get a good look at him because she wasn't wearing her glasses.
"I had no words for it. I was scared that the house, or that the garage was going to cave in. I didn't know where the guy was. I didn't know how much damage [was] back there. [I was in] just complete shock," said Carter.
Carter spent all morning cleaning up the debris with the help of neighbors. She says there's still a lot of work to be done, but some things cannot be fixed.
"My kids' cribs that, you know - my oldest is 14 years old - that's just in pieces now. So so many memories are gone. But I'm glad that everyone's safe and that no one's been hurt. My neighbor's fine, her kids are fine, and my kids are fine," said Carter.
Contractors say the garage will be fine and boarded it up, but they do not know how long it will take to fix it.
There was minor damage to the rear bumper of the Jeep.
Waterville officers followed up on leads throughout the day in attempts to locate the driver and determine the extent of his injuries. Around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers did locate the driver at his residence.
At this time, charges are pending completion of the report and review by the prosecutor. Once charges are filed, the driver's name and information will be released.
