SHELBY COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - An empty plot of land just off of I-64 in Shelby County is about to be booming with construction leading up to the summer of 2014 grand opening of a new outlet mall.
The final approval for the project came Tuesday night at a meeting of The Triple S Planning Commission, which regulates projects for Simpsonville, Shelbyville, and Shelby County.
"We moved here in 1997," said Joe Scrogham who lives right next door to the outlet mall site.
He and his wife have seen a lot of change out here in that time.
"We were probably the second or third house to be built on this road since then there's probably been 100 or better," Scrogham said.
Tuesday's final vote means it's about to get even cozier along his road. The $80 million outlet mall project received its final approval. It's been in the development phases for about a year. Nearly a dozen residents expressed concerns about the project at Tuesday's meeting.
"The traffic situation and the lights," said resident Michael Riggs.
Those seemed to be the overwhelming concerns from residents who seem to be optimistic about the project.
"We all knew that the interchange would be developed at some point and time," Riggs said.
"I mean who else can have their own outlet mall in their backyard? I'm not opposed to it," Scrogham said.
Project leaders have been working while waiting for all the necessary permissions, having blueprints made which show a design similar to a Louisville icon. In fact, developers say they already have the mall 70% filled, but don't look for any store announcements just yet.
"At this point until we commence construction we will keep those in the inaugural press release and that's when we'll announce all those names," said Thomas Rumptz with Horizon Group Properties.
He says you can expect lots of jobs.
"We will be creating 1,000 permanent jobs and then once the center opens up we'll also have seasonal jobs which will probably be about 500 to 600 at the holiday times," Rumptz said.
Developers say a major portion of the mall should be complete by the middle of next year.
The interstate in that area is already under construction. I-64 is going to go from two lanes to three lanes in that area. That project is set to wrap up in the spring of next year, just ahead of the opening of the mall.
