EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
For most women, that diamond engagement ring is one of their most prized possessions.
One woman has a story of how someone found her missing diamond in the rough.
The story begins on February 11, 1995 with a perfect proposal.
"It was just, it was a great night," Christi Hansen said. "We had a 14 month engagement."
And in Christi's case, the perfect bling to go with it.
"It's a marquis diamond on top with channel-set baguettes all around all four sides of it," Christi said.
Christi wore that ring every day for 13 years until all of a sudden, her half-carat marquis diamond disappeared.
"I looked down and noticed that my diamond was gone out of the top of it," Christi said.
Christi frantically retraced her steps and her co-workers at Brake Supply formed a giant search party.
"We basically tore my whole desk apart, on our hands and knees going through the floor. I even went through all the bathrooms," Christi said.
That's not even the worst of it.
"I loaded my whole car up with full trash bags and then got home and laid a tarp out in my garage and literally with rubber gloves went through every piece of trash, thinking I was going to find it in there," Christi said.
When the diamond didn't turn up, Christi's husband eventually bought her a new ring.
Four and a half years passed, and then Wayne Sutton, a technician with Alpha Laser, showed up for work.
It just so happens that last Thursday that Christi's old printer was the first one he checked.
"I was just looking and it was like right in here," Wayne said. "I thought it was a piece of dust or something, piece of paper, but I was blowing it around and trying to get it out and it wouldn't move. I just grabbed it and I was looking at it and was like, 'this looks like a diamond,'" Wayne said.
And it was. It was Christi's diamond, covered in toner.
"I immediately told somebody I found a diamond I think. I need to find out who this belongs to. They did a little searching and I heard some screaming. I think I found the owner," Wayne said.
"I don't know what to think, what to feel. I just, I couldn't believe it, what he was showing me," Christi said.
So a happy ending to the story, a bride, now married 16 years, reunited with the stone that started it all.
"It's going down in my memory bank as the number one best time at work ever," Wayne said.
"He is my hero. He is my hero. He is," Christi said.
Christi is going to keep her new ring on her finger, make the found diamond into a necklace, and put a new stone in the old setting so she has three pieces from her original wedding set to give her three sons in the future.
