MADISON, AL (WAFF) -
One school is telling the Easter Bunny to take a hike. Their decision to cancel an egg hunt due to religious concerns has some parents upset.
Parents were asked to donate eggs for an "academic egg hunt" at Heritage Elementary School Wednesday. However, Monday they received an email from the teacher that egg hunt was off.
The email stated that the principal had concerns over activities related to or centered around a religious holiday and that they would go ahead and leave out the egg part.
It didn't sit well with parent Karen Hensley, who said she was upset when she heard because the word Easter was already being left out on purpose.
She felt like the school was being overly cautious and in turn was cutting out fun for the students altogether.
"To take away what children are looking forward to, what's next? You take away Easter today and Christmas tomorrow. Let kids be kids so they can enjoy what we did when we were children," added Hensley.
In a statement, Principal Dr. Lydia Davenport said she was trying to respect religious differences in the community by not favoring one belief.
After hearing from a few parents and our phone call, the principal made some adjustments to the event to include more than just eggs so all can participate.
