Metrics Mania will determine which American university within the esteemed college basketball championships will wear the research crown

PHILADELPHIA, March 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world's leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today announced the launch of Metrics Mania, the first competition of its kind to measure the research impact of American universities participating in the college basketball championships.

Today millions of basketball fans across the U.S. will peruse their brackets to witness the opening of one of the sport world's most anticipated events: the collegiate basketball championships. While the 64 chosen schools are the cream-of-the-crop on the basketball court, many of these institutions are also high scorers when it comes to their research programs. Thomson Reuters will put these esteemed programs to the test in its Metrics Mania.

Metrics Mania winners will be determined weekly from March 19 through April 8 from reports pulled from Thomson Reuters InCitesTM, a robust, web-based evaluation tool that analyzes a university's research productivity and performance based on citation data derived from Thomson Reuters Web of KnowledgeSM. The brackets in Metrics Mania will align competing institutions in six rounds to see how research programs compare with those of their peers. Each week fans can view how their favorite schools/teams perform against new metrics measuring the influence of their research efforts.

"We are very excited to host the first-ever Metrics Mania," says Gordon Macomber, managing director of Scientific and Scholarly Research at Thomson Reuters. "Not only will this be a fun program for the scholarly research community, but it will also give Thomson Reuters an opportunity to highlight the great research programs within the schools competing in our brackets. As an industry leader in evaluating the performance and impact of an institution's research program, InCites will offer a unique perspective of each school's efforts."

Metrics Mania fans can follow the game with the latest updates on the ScienceWatch Twitter Feed  and Web of Knowledge Facebook. View the official Metrics Mania bracket. The competition will begin Tuesday, March 19, and end with the naming of the champion on April 8.
