SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

The University of Illinois has paid nearly $2 million in the last four years to install security cameras around their campus.

Similar upgrades can be found on John A. Logan campus in Carterville.

Those patrolling say more cameras means more security and less crime.

John A. Logan's campus may look pretty empty the Monday after Spring Break.

But that doesn't mean it's not being watched, watched from just about every angle.

"They are placed all around the campus, Inside, outside," says Chris Willis who works for campus security.

There are 120 cameras with 24-hour surveillance.

Something campus police say they know they can rely on.

"There is a lot to cover and we can't cover it all, so those cameras really help," says Willis.

And like the University of Illinois in Champaign, John A. Logan is upping security too with the addition of 30 more cameras.

Willis says when they first installed the security cameras back in 2000, the crime rate dropped dramatically and with adding even more to a new area on campus-he hopes to keep theme going.

"Whatever they do it is going to get caught on camera, It helps us a bunch as far as investigations," says Willis.

But with any amount of extra security some students say you should never put your guard down.

"There are some nights where I just walk right out here to my car like it's nothing and I get in and I go home," says Jennifer Alsbury, a Pre-Nursing student at JALC. "You don't know who is out here with you so you have to keep an eye out for things," she says.

Campus security also staffs eight officers and six security guards.

Both Shawnee and Rend Lake Community College have a campus security cameras installed on their campus.

Meanwhile in Missouri, Southeast Missouri State University officials say they currently have more than 350 surveillance cameras on campus.

They say new cameras are added as new buildings are constructed on campus (a new residence hall is under construction on the north campus and the River Campus is being expanded as well).

University officials say they expect to have between 425 to 450 cameras by the end of this year. In addition, Southeast also has some mobile surveillance units that can be moved from location to location as needed.
