An Evansville man has been arrested on battery and strangulation charges after holding down and beating his ex-girlfriend.

On Friday, March 15, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Sleepy Falls around 10:15 a.m. regarding a domestic violence situation in progress.

Upon arrival, deputies met the victim who stated her ex-boyfriend, 44-year-old John Thomas Wells III, had held her down in the bedroom and abused her.

In addition, he had poured several different liquids on her face and cut a portion of her hair off.

The victim stated Wells had already left the residence and was driving a black Chevy Traverse with handicap plates. Deputies observed injuries on the victim consistent to the victim's statement.

Deputies pulled over the vehicle in the area of Pearl Drive. Wells, was the only occupant of the vehicle. Wells stated he was actually the victim and was battered by the victim in the face and chest.

Deputies did not observe any signs of injuries on Wells' face. During the course of their interview with Wells, deputies observed blood on Wells' right calf and right hand. When the deputies questioned Wells about the blood, Wells stated he had cut himself shaving. Deputies again observed no corroborating injuries or evidence.

The sheriff's office investigators say they met with the victim at St. Mary's Hospital. According to the victim, she had been staying with Wells because she was experiencing personal problems. She said Wells then became angry because the victim had been texting with her ex-husband.

The victim told authorities that Wells held her down on the bed and poured barbecue sauce and mouthwash over her head and body. She said she was allowed to shower because the mouthwash was burning her eyes.

She then called a cab and was waiting to leave, when she said Wells then came back into the bedroom and pulled her off the bed by the hood of her sweatshirt. Wells then held the victim down on the floor by sitting on her chest and clamping down on her throat.

She said Wells took a pair of scissors and cut off the top of her hair.

The victim said that while holding her down, Wells covered her mouth and nose and made threats of killing the victim and her family members.

When the victim struggled to get away, she was cut on the wrist. Once the victim got away, Wells fled the scene and called 911.

Wells was transported to the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center where he as arrested and processed for multiple charges.
