(RNN) - Pastry and math lovers rejoice - Thursday is a day for you all.
National Pi Day honors the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. The date, 3-14, matches the first three numbers of pi: 3.14.
Princeton University even has a weeklong Pi Day party, complete with pie eating and judging contests, pi recitations and more. The celebration and the date also coincide with the birthday of inventor Albert Einstein, who did not discover pi but probably would have if nobody did it first.
The Princeton Pi Party has the only Twitter feed to celebrate the occasion, too.
Pi is used in geometry to find the area of a circle and volume of cylinders. Pie is used as a delightful treat after dinners, or in the case of chicken pot pie, for dinner.
Represented by the Greek letter Π, it has been measured in different forms throughout history. From a Biblical reference in the Old Testament to mathematician Archimedes determining what pi is, it is shown no matter the size of the circle, pi is always the same.
According to CNN, computers have calculated pi up to its 2,000,000,000,000,000th, or 2 quadrillionth, digit. At Achatz Handmade Pie Co., you can calculate how much it would cost to buy up to 44 different types of pie, if you count cheesecake and quiche.
There is a website dedicated to the celebration and passion of pi, with everything from the history to strange legal errors involving the never ending mathematical function and ways to celebrate Pi Day.
The 111th Congress passed House Resolution 224 to make March 14 National Pi Day. Pie remains officially unrecognized by the U.S. government.
