Lindh family happy feds not appealing prayer order

Posted: Updated:

The family of American Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh says it's grateful the government isn't appealing a court ruling ordering an Indiana prison to allow Lindh and fellow Muslim inmates in a high-security unit to hold daily group prayers.

The family issued a statement Wednesday saying they're proud of Lindh for standing up for his religious freedom.

Tuesday was the deadline for the government to challenge the order issued in January, but the government didn't take any action.

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says in a statement that "after due consideration," high officials in the Department of Justice and Bureau of Prisons decided not to appeal.

Frank Lindh of San Francisco says he's scheduled to visit his son Thursday and Friday at the federal prison in Terre Haute.
