SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The Department of Public Works was notified around 7:30 a.m. by a crosswalk guard who noticed the sinkhole Wednesday morning.

The sinkhole is located in the vicinity of Holyoke High school off of Resnic and Beech Street.

According to United Water worker Michael Burke, the sinkhole is 15' deep, 12' long and 12' wide.

Burke told CBS 3 that sink holes are typically 2' deep.

The hole had been formed after a sewer main break, which caused water to wash away the soil and ground beneath the sidewalk.

United Water crews told CBS 3 it could take up to three days to fix.

Burke also say sinkholes this size are very rare here in the state.

He also says this will not interfere with the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday.

There are currently crews standing around the area to ensure the safety of the students and the rest of the public
