"And the "Firefighter of the Year" award goes to..."

Arson Investigator Richard Howard is the recipient of the 32nd annual Green River Kiwanis' Firefighter of the Year award.

Howard has been with the Evansville Fire Department for more than 20 years.

He is the only Evansville fire investigator to work with a K-9. Howard and Shadow have been partners for two years now. Shadow is the third K-9 the fire department has worked with.

Howard says it's an proud to win this award, "It's an honor to be nominated by my peers. That means the most to me. With 282 firefighters, plus the office staff, your odds of ever achieving this level, or doing anything noteworthy enough to be here is pretty slim," he says.

Howard received a wall plaque from Kiwanis and a $100 gift card from Fifth Third Bank and the Evansville Firefighters Federal Credit Union, each. He says he will use it to take his wife out for a nice dinner.
